Southwest General Health Center
Southwest General is a partner of University Hospitals Health System of Cleveland, however all training for this program is conducted at Southwest General. The Southwest General podiatric residency program is completely separate from the University Hospitals podiatric residency program.
No other residency programs are sponsored at Southwest General. Podiatric Medicine and Surgery training has been active at Southwest since 1999 and is very well established. At times some non-podiatric residents sponsored by other hospitals such as orthopeadics, neurosurgery, and urology rotate at the hospital
Podiatric medicine and surgery with full scope of reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, Hospital and Office based.
Lab Coats, $1500 each year per resident available for training related expenses.
Southwest General sponsored a very successful PMSR-24 from 1999-2007 and began the PMSR/RRA-36 in 2021. During the gap we have been training residents from University Hospitals which has been phased out as Southwest residents replaced the UH residents. Currently a total of 5 residents are in training (2 PGY-1’s. 1 PGY-2, 1 PGY-3, and 1-PGY-3 transfer) At the present time we are approved for a total of 4 residents at all times with a temporary approval for the current transfer resident. Going forward we plan to have one resident starting July 1, 2024 to complement what will be 2 PGY-2’s and 1 PGY-3. Last year we accepted 2 residents which is what we are approved to do every third year. With few exceptions training occurs at the hospital, nearby hospital surgery center, and offices on the hospital main campus. The program offers excellent volume and diversity of surgical procedures as well as a high volume of hospital and office patients. Once selected, it is desirable for residents to live near the hospital as we have a busy ED. Call is divided by 4 residents. In addition to salary and standard hospital employee benefits, $1500 per resident per year is available to reimburse for any training related expenses.
